Effortless Microwave Pear Jam

Desserts

March 22, 2026

Ever dreamed of making homemade jam without the fuss of big pots and constant stirring? Say hello to your new secret weapon: the microwave! This genius method cuts down cooking time dramatically, locks in the gorgeous, vibrant flavour and colour of the fruit, and completely eliminates the dreaded risk of a scorched pan. It’s pure jam-making magic!

Ingredients

• 1.5 kg / 3.3 lbs Conference pears, about 8, peeled, cored, and chopped
• 1 lemon, juiced
• 250 g / 1 1/4 cups white caster sugar

Instructions

1. Place the chopped pears and lemon juice into a large, microwave-safe bowl. Cover loosely with a plate or microwave-safe lid.
2. Microwave on full power (based on 800W) for 10 minutes, stopping to stir after 5 minutes.
3. Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Add the sugar and use a hand blender to pulse the mixture a few times. Aim for a chunky texture rather than a perfect purée.
4. Return the bowl to the microwave, uncovered, and cook for a final 15–20 minutes. Stir every 5 minutes to prevent sticking.
5. The jam is ready when most of the water has evaporated. Test the set by placing a small spoonful onto a chilled plate; if it holds its shape and wrinkles when pushed, it’s done.
6. Allow the jam to cool completely before potting into sterilised jars. It will keep for up to a month in the fridge.

Pro Tips

• Experiment with other fruits like apples, strawberries, or rhubarb. You may need to adjust the sugar and cooking time.
• For a stovetop version, simmer all in a pan for about 30 minutes, mashing the fruit halfway through, until it reaches a jam consistency.
• Keep a small plate in the freezer to test for set. A dollop of ready jam will wrinkle when pushed.
• Control the texture by using a potato masher for a chunkier jam or blending longer for a smoother finish.

FAQ

Q: Is this microwave pear jam recipe vegan
A: Yes, this pear jam is naturally vegan as it uses only pears, lemon juice, and sugar. For those following a strict vegan diet, you may want to ensure your caster sugar is certified vegan to confirm it wasn’t processed with bone char.

Q: Can I use a plant-based sweetener instead of white sugar
A: You can experiment with other sweeteners like maple syrup or coconut sugar, but this will alter the flavour, colour, and consistency. Sugar is crucial for helping the jam to set and acts as a preservative, so substituting it may result in a looser, more sauce-like texture and a shorter shelf life in the fridge.

Q: What are some vegetarian or vegan ways to enjoy this pear jam
A: This jam is incredibly versatile in a vegetarian diet. Spread it on toast or vegan scones, swirl it into plant-based yogurt or oatmeal, use it as a filling for pastries, or even as a sweet glaze for roasted tofu or tempeh.

Q: How do I store this homemade vegetarian jam
A: Once the jam has cooled completely, transfer it to sterilised jars with airtight lids. It must be stored in the refrigerator and will keep for up to one month, as it has a lower sugar content than traditional, long-life jams.
