    1⁄2 cup shortening

    1⁄4 cup butter

    1 cup brown sugar

    1 egg

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda

    1⁄2 teaspoon salt

    1 cup all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    1 cup quick-cooking oats

    3⁄4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

    1⁄4 cup chopped walnuts

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream together well the shortening, butter, and brown sugar. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
    Sift the baking soda and salt into the flour. Add the ground cinnamon and blend well. Mix in the shortening and sugar mixture. Stir in the oats and chocolate chips.
    Shape 3 or 4 tablespoons of the dough into a ball about 2 inches in diameter. Place on the baking sheet, and set well apart (6 balls to a tray). Press down gently with a fork. Press a few walnut pieces in the middle, if desired.
    Bake for 13–15 minutes or until done. Let cool. Store in an airtight container.
