    Sangría

    Makes almost 3 quarts

    • ½ gallon dry red wine
    • ⅓ cup sugar
    • ⅓ cup brandy
    • 3 large oranges
    • 2 large lemons
    • ¼ cup Triple Sec
    • ice cubes
    • 1 to 1½ cups club soda, to taste

    1. Pour the wine into a punch bowl and stir in the sugar and the brandy. Cut 2 of the oranges into eighths and 1 of the lemons into quarters. Squeeze the juice from each piece of cut fruit into the wine, then drop the fruit into the punch bowl. Stir again, and chill for an hour or two with the fruit.
    2. At this point, the cut, squashed fruit can be removed if you want a more elegant sangría, or it can be left in if you don’t care about looks. Halve and thinly slice the remaining orange and thinly slice the second lemon. Add the sliced fruit to the sangría, floating it on top. Stir in the Triple Sec, add just enough ice to keep the sangría cold, and just before serving, pour in some club soda. Give it one final stir, pour, and drink.
    3. This is a basic sangria recipe. You may want to elaborate by adding some sliced apples, sliced bananas, or other fruit, or by slightly varying some of the proportions. All variations are perfectly acceptable, as long as they taste good.
