1⁄3 cup barbecue sauce
1⁄4 cup water
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1–2 tablespoons hot sauce (or to taste)
2 teaspoons sugar
2 blocks extra-firm tofu, well pressed
1⁄2 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
In a small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, water, vinegar, soy sauce, hot sauce, and sugar until well combined. Set aside.
Slice pressed tofu into 1⁄4-inch-thick strips.
Sauté onions in oil, and carefully add tofu. Fry tofu on both sides until lightly golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side.
Reduce heat and add barbecue sauce mixture, stirring to coat tofu well. Cook over medium-low heat until sauce absorbs and thickens, about 5–6 minutes.
Tofu Versus Seitan
This recipe, like many pan-fried or stir-fried tofu recipes, will also work well with seitan, though seitan needs a bit longer to cook all the way through; otherwise, it ends up tough and chewy. Seitan is not typically more expensive, however it can be more difficult to find.
