Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (40 g / 1.41 oz) chia seeds
  • 4 cups (960 ml) plain, vanilla, or chocolate almond milk
  • 1 large banana, preferably frozen
  • ¼ cup (40 g / 1.41 oz) hemp seeds
  • ¼ cup (30 g / 1.06 oz) unflavored or vanilla hemp protein powder
  • 2 Tbs / 15g (0.53 oz) unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder
  • 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 Tbs cacao nibs, optional
  • 1 Tbs coconut sugar, optional
  • For an extra thick and frosty smoothie, use a banana that has been peeled, sliced, and frozen solid.
  • Grind a larger batch of chia seeds at the beginning of the week and store it in an airtight container for quick smoothie prep.
  • For a mocha-flavored kick, add 1 tablespoon (15 ml / 0.5 fl oz) of finely ground espresso or instant coffee powder with the cocoa.
  • If you don't have cacao nibs, feel free to substitute with an equal amount of dairy-free dark chocolate chips.

Method

  1. Using a clean coffee grinder or spice mill, grind the chia seeds into a fine powder. This is key for a smooth, thick consistency.
  2. Transfer the ground chia to a high-speed blender.
  3. Add the almond milk, banana, hemp seeds, protein powder, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract.
  4. Blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides if necessary.
  5. Add the optional cacao nibs and coconut sugar, if using. Pulse a few times to incorporate, or blend longer if you prefer them fully mixed in.
  6. Serve immediately.
