Ingredients

  • 1 package (14 oz / 396 g) superfirm tofu, drained
  • 2 Tbs (30 ml / 1 fl oz) tahini paste
  • ½ cup (30 g / 1.06 oz) nutritional yeast
  • 1½ tsp (4 g / 0.14 oz) onion powder
  • 1 Tbs (15 ml / 0.5 fl oz) coconut oil
  • ½ cup (80 g / 2.82 oz) hemp seeds
  • 12 (4.5-inch / 11 cm) organic corn tortillas, warmed
  • 1 cup (100 g / 3.5 oz) thinly sliced green onions
  • 1 cup (16 g / 0.56 oz) fresh cilantro leaves
  • 4 limes, cut into wedges
  • Hot sauce, for drizzling
  • For the best texture, press the tofu for 15-20 minutes before crumbling to remove excess water. This helps it brown better in the skillet.
  • The tofu filling can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Simply reheat in a skillet before serving.
  • Lightly toast your corn tortillas in a dry skillet or directly over a low gas flame for a few seconds per side to enhance their flavor and make them more pliable.

Method

  1. In a medium bowl, use a fork or your hands to mash the drained tofu into crumbles resembling the texture of scrambled eggs.
  2. Stir in the tahini, nutritional yeast, and onion powder until well combined.
  3. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  4. Heat the coconut oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add the tofu mixture and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through and slightly browned.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  7. Stir in the hemp seeds, mixing well to incorporate them into the warm tofu.
  8. Transfer the finished filling to a serving bowl.
  9. Assemble the tacos by generously filling each warmed corn tortilla with the tofu mixture.
  10. Serve immediately with bowls of green onions, cilantro, lime wedges, and your favorite hot sauce for everyone to customize their own.
  11. Add a pinch of smoked paprika or a ½ teaspoon of garlic powder to the tofu mixture for an extra layer of savory, smoky flavor.
